Described rather scathingly by Pevsner as ‘operatic scenery’, Brancepeth Castle has often been dismissed by architectural historians as a ‘sham’ castle, as it was extensively rebuilt in the 19th century. But is this really the case? Over the past few months Penny Middleton, our Built Heritage and Conservation Manager, has looked at evidence of the medieval castle and how this has influenced our experience of the site today.
